Albert Zyambo is a resident of Lusaka, Zambia currently studying for his Bachelor of Surgery and Bachelor of Medicine (MBCHB) at Ridgeway Campus, The University of Zambia (UNZA). Albert currently holds a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology from UNZA. He views research as a tool that can contribute to the generation of local epidemiological data on various health issues and improve health care for all Zambians. Albert sees the Young Emerging Scientist (YES) as an opportunity to learn from medical personnel who are passionate about research and who strive to contribute to betterment of research in Zambia. He also looks forward to working with fellow mentees as their knowledge and embark on various projects as provided by YES Zambia.
Alinani is a dynamic Zambian with interest in medical research with inclination towards HIV/AIDS, poverty related diseases and maternal and neonatal health). He is passionate about promoting and improving health quality, education and accessibility in his community. He is a part-time tutor of Infection Prevention and Control diploma program at the University Zambia and also volunteers/ assists in medical works at a Health Clinic in his home town and is also a part-time lecturer at a clinical medicine college. He once worked as the Business Affairs Secretary for the University of Zambia Student Union. He is self-motivated, always aiming higher to learn new skills and has a high innovative approach towards work. He is a final year medical student at the University of Zambia pursuing Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) and has a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Biology (BSc.HB).
Alinani enjoys farming, mentoring youths in his community, playing golf and social networking during his free time.
Bilal Patel is a 7th year Medical student at the University Of Zambia School Of Medicine. His decision to become a medical doctor stems from his curiosity about the human body from a young age. With the advancements being made in the medical field every day, he aspires to make a valuable contribution. He believes there is still a lot to explore and learn about the human body and how the environment affects it. He is grateful to be part of YES Zambia as it will be an opportunity to gain guidance as a young doctor on how to help patients even if it may be minimal. He has keen interest in health promotion and has been doing so through his membership at Daisy Care.
His research interests include Cardiology, Infectious diseases, pediatrics, internal medicine and public health.
In his free time, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, trekking, travelling, cooking and playing football.
Simbeya Anthony is from Lusaka, Zambia. He is enthusiastic about transformation of society for the better with generation and application of novel ideas. He is part of the initiators of Daisycare,an organisation aimed at voluntarily promoting better health through health awareness and screening ventures in Zambia. Anthony holds a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology from the University of Zambia(UNZA).He is currently pursuing his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Zambia.
Anthony hopes to see a world where knowledge, at its pinnacle, is merged with passion to improve humanity in all its aspects. During his free time, he takes pleasure in playing the guitar, watching movies, drawing, jogging and meeting new people.
Bwalya Chanda Mumba was born and raised in Lusaka. She holds two Bachelors of Science degrees, one in Microbiology and the other in Human Biology and is currently in her sixth year of medicine at the University of Zambia. She is passionate about helping out the less privileged in our society and is always eager to help out in any way she can, no matter how small, because she believes a little done by many goes a long way and for this reason is a member of the LEO club as a volunteer carrying out service projects in the community. She has been part of many activities as a volunteer by other similar organizations such Youths of the United Nations (YUNA). She looks forward to working with more people for this common good. She gained an interest in research when carrying out her own undergraduate research in fulfillment of Microbiology degree.
In her free time, she enjoys reading, baking, playing scrabble and spending time with family and friends.
I am from the Copperbelt Province of Zambia and believe the future of Medicine is research. I have a passion for reproductive health among the youth. Currently involved in advocating for family planning, sexual and reproductive health with The International Youth Alliance for Family Planning – Zambia. I have also volunteered as a peer educator at youth friendly corners. In my free time, I enjoy reading novels and research articles, playing basketball and spending time with friends. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Human Biology and am currently pursuing a bachelors degree of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Zambia. The key to advances in Medicine and related fields is science-based evidence, patience to plod along through literature and the persistence to keep searching until one realizes that which is being sought.
Faith Mumba is from Luanshya, Zambia. She is passionate and committed to giving something back to the community using the knowledge, skills and experience gathered over the course of life so far. She has strong values built on helping others, as well as acts of generosity and kindness. Prior to joining Young Emerging Scientists she served as the Publicity secretary (2016-2017 Academic Year) for the University of Zambia Student Union, ridgeway campus. She then served as the vice president for the medical students She later worked with The HELP foundation as the project manager,a non profitable organization aimed at Helping Humanity through Education, Love and partnership. Its also aimed at fighting gender based violence. Currently, she is the founder of Boy Empowerment- NGO, an upcoming organization that is aimed at empowering, sensitizing, educating and mentoring the young boys. She is also the president of Medical Women Association Of Zambia Student-chapter. Faith received her Bachealor of science in Human Biology at the University of Zambia and currently pursuing her MBCHB.
In her free time she likes to cook and read. Faith wants to useresearch in medicine to help me give back to the community.
Caleb Chilufya is a fourth year Medical Student at The Lusaka Apex Medical University. Before Medical school, Caleb worked as a Clinical Officer in Mayukwayukwa refugee camp, which houses people from different countries like Congo DR, Angola, Burundi and Sudan. During his five years of working at the camp, he was privileged to deliver three sets of twins in a space of one: an experience he regards as one of his most interesting achievements in his career. Working at the camp also gave him an opportunity to learn different languages including Swahili, French and Portuguese and appreciate diverse culture.
He is driven by his passion for his work and career and encourages those around him to create a valued relationship with their work. Outside work, he enjoys listening to music, playing chess, and making jokes with his friends and family as this lights them up.
Choolwe Matongo was born on the 28th December 1997. She obtained her secondary education from Njase girls 2009 to 2013. After completing her secondary education she volunteered to be teaching children below the age of the 12 on how to read and write at Mmabana outreach program for a year. Later on she was faced with a tragedy, her Grandmother suffered from cancer. Choolwe took it upon herself to nurse her Grandmother, she helped by preparing meals, giving her medications that the doctors prescribed and making sure she doesn't miss any of her hospital appointments. Seeing her Grandmother battle with cancer and how other people suffered in the hospital shaped her career into wanting to be a Doctor and a researcher. She is currently a 4th year medical student at Lusaka Apex Medical University aspiring to graduate with Bachelors of Science in Human Biology and Medicine and Surgery. In 2019 she applied to be a part of YES Zambia as she believes this program will highlight the contributions of all young research students and serve as a catalyst for the young generation.
Kasakula is a student at the University of Zambia currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery. She is very passionate about Women and reproductive health and pediatrics and child health. Moved by the impact research has had on the health sector, she aspires to become an accomplished Zambian medical researcher. Being a part of the YES Zambia mentorship programme is an opportunity to advance her career and she hopes to utilize all the provisions available to attain her goal. Outside school, Kasakula is a people person, jovial and has interests in musical instruments particularly the guitar, art and sports particularly soccer.
Mosho Mwelwa is a seventh (7th) Year Medical Student pursuing a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at The University of Zambia School of Medicine. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology and Certificate in Public Speaking and Communication Excellence Skills.
She is very passionate about making a difference in the community and helping others because she believes it is not enough to go through life just working for oneself. One has to reach out, help others along the way and be their steppingstone because someone had done the same for them to be where they are. For the past three (3) years she has served as a Committee Member in Charge of Health and Care Support and she is the Public Relations Officer at Faithful Hearts Foundation. She has actively participated in life changing mentorship sessions on Leadership, Educational, Spiritual and Entrepreneurship programs at both Set Apart International ( www.setapartinternational.org) and Kupes Young Women Network (www.Kupesnetwork.org). She is not only a democratic leader but transformational leader who is passionate about women health (Gynaecologic oncology and maternal fetal medicine), especially after she conducted a research on "Factors Associated with Cervical Cancer Awareness in Women above 18 years old in Chongwe District of Lusaka Province" for her 6th Year school Project. As a YES Zambia fellow, she is looking forward to learning more about research in the medical field, being practical and building confidence in her research work and Medical career. In her free time enjoys community volunteering, listening to music, watching movies, jogging, writing and travelling. She is greatly inspired by Lisa Nichols, Gladys Patswani, Michele Obama, Norena Mutoya Chiteba and Caroline Marsh.
Pharidah Rajan Ibrahim Omar Sundi was born on 19th march 1998 and comes from the Eastern part of Zambia . She is a fourth year Medical student at Lusaka Apex Medical University. She attained her primary school at Kanjala primary and secondary at Katete Secondary school where she emerged as best grade twelve students. She believes to have adopted both her parent's brilliant brains because throughout high school, she always the best student academically and holds many accolades to her name and thus served as head girl and participated in activities like debate, JETS and competitive quizzes . She reflects a variety of personality, including ambition, determination, qualities of generosity and thoughtfulness. She encourages fighting for what one desires and believes in doing it through God because nothing great comes easy and with God everything is possible. She is student motivated by her love for learning and succeeding as she strive to become an outstanding and successful woman in society with a definitive goal of becoming a specialized doctor and researcher. In her spare time, she enjoys watching movies, playing games, taking walks and reading novels.
Penias Jr has grown up in Lusaka, Zambia. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology (BscHb) from the University of Zambia in 2017 and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) at the aforementioned institution. Penias is a founding member of an initiative called Daisy Care that promotes health awareness amongst youths. He is also a member of the Global Shapers Community, a network of young people driving dialogue action and change. In addition he is a member of the Zambia Heart and Stroke Foundation. Penis is passionate about public health and views research as a means of influencing policy that can revitalize the health sector. He is particularly interested in infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases and health economics. In his free time he enjoys watching football, travelling and preaching.
Hazel Priscilla Kasonkomona was born on 15th March, 1998. She went to Lwitikila girls Secondary school where she graduated high school in 2015. She is currently a fourth year student at Lusaka Apex Medical University aspiring to graduate with bachelors of Science in Human Biology and Medicine and Surgery. Her interest in becoming a doctor emerged when she was learning high school biology where she found the human body to be interesting. This made her curious enough to pick medicine as a career path. In August 2019, due to motivation by the successful research career of Doctor Mwansa Ketty Lubeya, Priscilla attended the CBU Medical Research and Mentorship Symposium. This aided her to build her research career while she was still a student. To kick off her research career, in September 2019, she attended a training where she got certified in Good Clinical Laboratory Practice and Good Clinical Practice, and in December she attended the initiation training for the Woman2 clinical trial at University Teaching Hospital which brought the GCP/GCLP training to reality. She is currently working on her first research on Schistosomiasis in Chisamba district with Takashi Mayachi.
Sunela Sujan a highly motivated research orientated medical student. Conducted an individual research as part of the mbchb program has opened a new outlook on research as an individual. It showed that research is vital for future innovation as medicine evolves each day. She volunteer part time under Copper Rose zambia as she is a strong believer in making a change in the society we live in. Every input done regardless of magnitude will make an impact in our society. No input made is too small. Passionate and compassionate to give back to the community using the knowledge and skills gained during various undertakings.
Born and raised right in the heart of Zambia (Lusaka), Tepwanji is a young and avid individual who believes that science has, is and always will change the world. And is proud to be a part of a generation of world changers in a country in which research has not yet reached its peak. Prior to joining YES Zambia, she was intellectually involved in the formation of health related sensitization programmes at a local radio station and used that as a platform to fuse her love of mass media with her passion for health. Tepwanji received her bachelor’s degree in science, Human Biology from the University of Zambia under the school of medicine and is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and Surgery. In her free time, she seeks adventure and talent. Creative writing, expressive arts, Talent development, film and media has always been an area of interest of hers in which she thrives.
Kanengo Zoe Nakamba is an award winning activist working with SRHR Africa Trust (SAT) in Zambia and is also the Deputy Country Coordinator for the Zambia Network of Young people living and affected with HIV/AIDS (ZNYP). She is Publicity Secretary for Nsakwa Ya Ba Kaonde (a Kaonde cultural association) and also the youngest member of the association at 21 years. Kanengo is an ambassador for the KUPES Young Women’s Network (KYWN).
Kanengo is the youngest person in Zambia to have written for the Bank of Zambia, having written an article titled, ‘’A better life through saving’’ in the 2015 periodical aged 16 years. She is an author of a research paper on myths around Male circumcision, benefits and risks of Medical Male circumcision and vaginal and foreskin health called Cancermucision. This paper has since won five awards such 2nd best innovation in Health in Zambia for 2018 at The SRHR Africa Trust (SAT) Zambia Innovation in Health awards.
Kanengo is a fourth year Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) student at Lusaka Apex Medical University (LAMU). She is a second year Photography student. And holds a Diploma in French language (Alliance Française), certificates in English as a foreign language (ETS), Leadership (KUPES), Project Planning and Management, Monitoring and Evaluation and Statistical Packaging for Social Science (SPSS) which she obtained from the University of Zambia.
